So it has been raining today and it is a bit too wet in the area that I want to paint in so i won’t be doing any work on the mural this evening. and to top it all off there is a lot of smoke in the area from a fire happening in northern Alberta. I can’t really spend too much time outside because the smoke affects me badly. Here is a picture of the sky outside the office window. The sun is actually red but my camera didn’t read it that way for some reason
However I thought I would show you some inspiration pictures that I have been looking at for the second, crazy big mural that I am going to be starting soon. The inspiration is Okanagan Lake.
We moved to Penticton when i was 5 and I lived there until i went to university in Kelowna at 18. I then lived in Kelowna until I was 24. So the lake has been a big part of my life and like all those things that you don’t appreciate until they are gone. I have not been back to Penticton for a couple years and I MISS the summers of being able to head to the beach for the day!
So we decided that our giant mural was going to be of Okanagan Lake. The mural is really big at 8 feet high and 30 feet long. I started drawing it out today and will post it when I have finished it. The process will be to draw it out on a grid that is 8 inches by 30 inches. Then create a grid on the wall that is a foot square and then use that to make sure that the proportions are correct.
Here is the main inspiration picture. If you click on the picture it will take you to the source picture on Flickr.
This is taken above Peachland. The little island on the right hand side is called Rattlesnake Island. What I liked about it is that it had both a foreground, lake and mountains.
This is an artist that I went to school with at Okanagan College when it was still called that! Her name is Robyn Lake and I doubt she remembers me but I love the colours in her paintings. I can imagine a similar colour palette on my wall
So there are some of my thoughts about my second mural. Now I am off to walk for 1/2 an hour on my treadmill!
